Environmental effect of HP inkjet cartridges

Posted Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by .

Many people do not realize the environmental effect that their typical Epson or HP inkjet cartridges can have on the environment, not just their pocketbooks. It is no secret that ink and toner products can be incredibly expensive. Many companies even put restrictions on their employees’ and give them print limits. This can be detrimental to morale and can decrease productivity and it also not a very fun way to run a business, but luckily there is an answer.

Ink and toner recycling programs can give businesses and private individuals a great way to help alleviate the cost while also helping the environment. Since literally hundreds of millions inkjet cartridges and toner refills are disposed of every year throughout the world, it can be a “green” move while also being a financial windfall. Since a toner or inkjet cartridge can be extremely expensive and can be a big drag on a company’s bottom line, recycling programs can be very beneficial in helping to combat this.

By either getting paid for or donating a used ink or printer toner cartridge, a large company or even an individual can save a significant amount of money each year. The easiest way to do this is to simply visit a local store that carries printers and printer supplies. Most of these locations offer a way to directly recycle nearly any amount of used printer supplies. There are even certain stores that are willing to provide store credit or even credit towards future printer-related spending, although it is not often significant. Regardless, it is still a great way to go about lowering the carbon footprint of a business and to become more “green” and environmentally friendly.

Unfortunately, many of these programs do not offer any sort of reimbursement for recycling. Another solution is to check online for other recycling programs. Although some may only give a small amount per used cartridge, a quick search of the internet yields sites that offer up to twenty dollars per cartridge. This can significantly lower spending on printing, and if one were to start a local collection agency, it could actually bring in profits that could potentially cover new printers or other workplace costs. Not only would it help bring in extra capital, it would also significantly improve the adverse effects on the environment. Even better, this would require little to no effort on anyone’s part, and could be accomplished very easily.
