In the event of a leak or spill

Posted Friday, October 29th, 2010 by .

Toner is a powder-based substance that goes inside cartridges and is used in laser printers.  It can produce documents quickly, thus making it more suitable for office use.  Printer ink is a liquid-based substance that is found in small tanks and fits nicely into slots inside inkjet printers.  These are designed more for personal use, such as photo printing and graphics.  Though these two systems of printing are quite different, a leak or spill is equally as annoying.

When ink spills, it is much like a pen exploding.  The stain will be wet and require dabbing with a damp sponge.  Once you have thoroughly dabbed the Canon BCI-6BK ink stain, let it air-dry for a while.  The best way for home users to proceed after the stain has dried would be to get some hairspray and spray the spot of the spillage.  Sandwich the fabric between to paper towels and be sure to continuously be blotting the spot until it has lifted.

Toner mishaps are a lot more common just because of the way the cartridges are designed.  Manufacturers recommend shaking the toner cartridge before installation to help it expand, which can lead to leakage.  Then you must remove the seal that is built into the cartridge to alleviate leakage when still packaged.  However, removing the seal can sometimes cause HP C4092A toner to shoot out into the printer or on the floor and sometimes even on users.

If the spot of toner is smaller than a coin, it can be cleaned with a standard vacuum.  However, for larger spills a specialized vacuum with an enhanced filter will need to be used.  Once the blue Brother TN210c toner on the floor is cleaned up, be sure to get a cotton towel and wipe down the inside of the machine.  Leaving toner soot in the unit can damage it.  Use the same kind of towel to hit the spots of toner on your clothes, which will separate the particles and they will scatter.  Whatever remains of the stain on your shirt should simply wipe off.
