Ink cartridge recycling for the future

Posted Monday, December 27th, 2010 by .

Over the last 10 years, the amount of people who recycle has increased rapidly.  This is a positive fact about the progress of our awareness and the importance of treating the environment right.  However, it is said that only about 28% of waste is reused.  This means at least 60% of the people on this earth do not recycle, and as our landfills grow increasingly over-loaded it is scary to think of the potential damage this could do.

In the UK alone, as many as 30 million inkjet cartridges, such as HP 95 ink, are wasted each year.  To put that in perspective, this amount would equal the weight of 18 blue whales.  Each toner cartridge is about 3 pounds, and millions of those are also wasted each year.  Though cartridges are considered disposable, each one can take as many as 1,000 years to decompose.  A single brand new inkjet cartridge requires 90 ML of oil to function and a toner cartridge needs about 3.5 liters.  Remanufactured cartridges require preserve the overuse of much-needed oil.

In 2007, major office supplies stores around the United States started offering $3 in-store credits for the return of used cartridges.  Not only that, some companies offer drop-off centers and even send trucks to pick up recycled ink and toner cartridges, like Dell 330-1438 toner, for instance.  These programs were designed to inspire people to recycle more, and make it as easy as possible to do so.

Today, 20%-30% of all toner and ink cartridges that are sold are remanufactured.  The companies that make these use recycled products and add some new parts to ensure that the quality and life-span are just as good as brand new ones.  It is estimated that any given cartridge can be reused 3-7 times, either for the same task or melted and used to make other things.  As the major life form on this planet, it is the responsibility of all human beings to make sure the environment remains as good as possible.  Recycling metals and plastics, like toner and Epson T069420 ink cartridges, is one way to get started.
