There are various different vendors that produce various kinds of printers that use ink rather than toner.  Most high-volume businesses will prefer a laser printer that uses toner because it can yield a lot more pages and produce much more efficiently.  However, for light-duty printing and precision, there is no better option than an inkjet printer.

Most inkjet units have only two ink cartridges, though some have four.  There are a few models that are set up for standard color printing with an optional photo cartridge sold separately that is designed specifically for high quality photos.  Most people looking for a personal printer would love the ability to print digital pictures at home rather than printing them at a photo lab.  Inkjet printers provide the convenience of at-home printing and the professional quality of a lab.

Inkjet cartridges are small, some smaller than a box of playing cards.  The innovative technology was a leader in the printing revolution, dating back to the 1950s.  In layman’s terms, the process consists of pushing tiny dots of ink through nozzles and applying them onto the page in layers.  The amount of dots defines the resolution, which is measured in DPI, or dots per inch.  The higher the resolution is, the better the quality of the documents and graphics.

There are ink printers that are manufactured by Xerox that do not use a cartridge at all.  These printers hold ink sticks, which are basically oversized crayons.  The sticks get heated, melt and eventually dissipate.  The ink cartridges, however, just like toner cartridges, simply run out and then the consumer must replace the cartridge.  Cartridge recycling is becoming an important issue more and more every day, with over 350 million empty containers piled up in our landfills.

Inkjet printers are the most popular kind in the world, mostly because of their range.  Some are basic and super affordable, while others are complex and expensive.  Regardless of your budget, you will always have enough for one inkjet printer or another.
