Making baby clothes

Posted Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 by .

Before you are a parent, it is virtually impossible to imagine how truly expensive it is to have a baby, let along multiple children.  However, the average cost is an overwhelming number that would surely strike fear into the hearts of expecting parents, or those who are planning on starting a family soon.  Hand me downs are a help, and the baby shower will definitely provide a base to start with.  But then what?

If you have a laser or an inkjet printer, you may find that you can use it as a tool to cut a few more corners.  You first have to make sure that the machine you have can print on iron-on transfers.  If yours does, then be prepared to save an abundance of money on baby clothes!  You can do to the local fabric store or even budget store and find low price clothing with a plain canvas.  Buy in bulk to reduce the initial cost.  Go to the paper supply store and purchase an industrial container of transfer paper.

Once you have these two main ingredients, it is up to you to use your creativity.  You can find clip-art or download pictures onto the computer.  You can come up with funny sayings, or cute ones.  Do some research and find a template on the internet that you can use to make a design.  Once you have decided on some, start printing.  You can even make some football logo shirts so your baby can match your husband on game day!

Once you print onto the transfers, lay the material on a flat surface and get out the trusty old iron.  Gently iron the transfer onto the shirt, but be sure not to press too hard so you do not melt the specialized paper.  Place the fabric under a flat, solid surface, like a textbook, so it will cool flat and even. Having a baby doesn’t have to be THAT expensive after all!
