The newest fundraiser on the block – collecting toner cartridges

If you are working with a non-profit and are sick of the typical fundraisers, like pancake dinners and bake sales, you might be ready to spice things up with a new sort of fundraiser that can be easy and very profitable. Earning money with recycled toner cartridges is a great way to make some money in a way that not many other people will be doing. You can collect these HP or Xerox toner cartridges from your local businesses over the course of a week or month and send them in, earning your non-profit a tidy sum with little overhead.

Toner cartridges are easy to collect – they are used by most offices and are easy to ask for, as a lot of companies don’t recycle or won’t miss the few dollars that come from sending them in. When you collect enough of them in bulk, you’ll be making some real money. An easy way to run a drive is to find a larger company that would be willing to donate all of their old HP P1006 toner cartridges to your non-profit. This shouldn’t be too hard – there are plenty of companies out there that recycle cartridges. You could also talk to local office supply stores and see if they might be willing to work with you, or find a mail-in recycling company that will pair up with your organization. Some companies will help you plan your fundraiser, giving you a better rate than they give other businesses because they like that the money is going to a non-profit group.

It’s important to know before you start what sort of cartridges are accepted by the place you will recycle them and what ones will not be accepted. You do not want to collect 30 Konica-Minolta 2430 toner cartridges only to find that they will not earn you any money. In addition, you’ll then have to find a place to take them, or risk throwing them into a landfill and making you and your fellow fundraisers feel terrible.

Once you have a list of what is acceptable to collect, you should brainstorm some ideas of businesses you could approach. Talk to parents, spouses, relatives, and friends to see if their businesses might be willing to donate an Oki toner cartridge here or a Dell cartridge there. Consider hitting up a large business in your area, or a big office park. The businesses you talk to might already have a deal with a cartridge recycling program, but they might be willing to give up some toner cartridges for a good cause.
